PhD scholarship winners
DeGroote | Hamilton, ON | May 18, 2011
The DeGroote School of Business' PhD program is thrilled to announce that our students have done exceptionally well in several scholarship competitions this year. These awards are particularly noteworthy given that in recent years the number of graduate programs across the province has increased and enrolment in many programs has grown dramatically. Congratulations to all the recipients.
Ontario Trillium Scholarship
The School of Graduate Studies recently asked each Faculty to nominate up to five incoming international doctoral students for the Ontario Trillium Scholarship. Late last Fall, the province announced that they would provide funding for 75 new scholarships to help attract the best and brightest international students to Ontario. Each award is valued at $40,000 per year and is renewable for a maximum of four years. McMaster was allotted five of these awards, and I am very pleased to announce that one of DeGroote's incoming PhD students, Maryam Ghasemaghaei has been announced as one of the recipients of this prestigious award.
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Scholarships
As previously announced, Ms. Mona Zanhour, a second year student in our Management of Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources (MOBHR) field, has been awarded a SSHRC scholarship valued at $20,000 for the next two years. This award is in addition to the following SSHRC scholarships that are being carried forward from previous years:
- James Chowhan was awarded $35,000 each year for up to three years in 2009/10;
- Christa Wilken (previously Austin) was awarded $20,000 each year for up to four years in 2009/10; and,
- Bruce Martin was awarded $35,000 each year for up to three years in 2010/11.
Ontario Graduate Scholarship
Each Fall, we encourage all eligible PhD students to apply for the Ontario Graduate Scholarship. An OGS award is valued at $15,000 and is valid for one year. We had 30 students apply for the 2011-12 competition and we are very pleased that one third of the applicants were successful. This is truly a testament to the quality of the students that make up our PhD program and the hard work that they are accomplishing. Please join me in congratulating the following students:
- Andrew Carrothers - Finance field of study;
- Jin Lei - Finance field of study;
- Christa Wilken (formerly Austin) - MOBHR field of study (declined – has completed degree);
- Mona Zanhour - MOBHR field of study (declined – accepted SSHRC award instead);
- Lorne Booker - IS field of study;
- John Laugusen - IS field of study;
- Jeff Pittaway - IS field of study;
- Hamed Qahri Saremi - IS field of study;
- Jianbo Qian - MS field of study; and,
- Anna Sadovnikov - Marketing field of study.
International Excellence Award
I am pleased to announce that (Darren) Chun-Hsio Wang, a first year MOBHR student, has been awarded one of six International Excellence Awards at McMaster. These awards are valued at $10,000 for one year.
Congratulations again to all these scholarship award winners!
