Marvin Ryder

Congratulations to Marvin Ryder of the DeGroote School of Business for receiving a Cornerstone Award from Hamilton Health Sciences. Ryder, assistant professor of strategic market leadership and health services management, was recognized at a ceremony at the atrium of Hamilton Health Sciences' David Braley Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke Research Institute this summer.

The Cornerstone Awards are presented annually to individuals who have made a significant contribution to health-care at Hamilton Health Sciences. Recipients are those who volunteer their time and display great leadership to enable a healthier, stronger community.

"Hamilton is a great city and only gets better with the active engagement of its citizens. I was raised to contribute to the community in whatever way I can and have been doing so since arriving in Hamilton in 1982. I was overwhelmed and humbled at receiving an award for work which I have so thoroughly enjoyed," says Ryder.

Ryder served as board chair of the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation from 2001 to 2003 and then as a member of the Board of Directors until 2010.

"I have had the wonderful privilege of working with and knowing Marvin for the past 11 years. Marvin always demonstrated a strong commitment to the values of the hospital and ensured that the board and the hospital continually acted responsibly in a way that best served the health care needs of the community," says Murray T. Martin, the president and chief executive officer of Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation.

Ryder was honoured for embodying the hospital's values of respect, caring, innovation, and accountability. He played a role in identifying these values years back through the Board of Directors' visioning process. Ryder was also recognized for his genuine motivation to do what's best for the Hamilton community, and for bringing his leadership, innovation, expertise, and passion to his many other volunteer roles. Other community projects he has been a part of include the Bay Area Leadership Program, Hamilton Aids Walk, and the YMCA Council of Governors.

"Marvin has become widely respected for his ability to face contentious issues in a way that challenges and supports others to rise above their personal issues so that the best outcomes can be achieved," says Martin. "Marvin's personal commitment to serving his community has certainly gone above and beyond."
