What is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, holds a special place in the hearts of many Muslims worldwide. It is one of the two blessed Eids that is celebrated; it commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering faith and obedience to Allah. It serves as a powerful reminder about sacrifice and how it isn’t just about giving up something valuable —it’s about sharing, caring, and fostering empathy.

When is Eid al-Adha?

It is observed on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijja in the Islamic lunar calendar. It lasts for four days and falls in the 12th and final month of the Islamic calendar, Dhul Hijjah.

While the exact date may vary in different regions, it is predicted to be from Sunday, June 16, 2024, and to Thursday, June 20, 2024.

How is Eid al-Adha celebrated?

Following the Eid prayer on the first day of Eid al-Adha, Muslim families come together to perform the Qurbani or ritual sacrifice. The meat used (from a sheep, goat, cow, or camel) is divided into three parts: one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for those in need. This practice reflects the spirit of generosity and community that defines the occasion.

How do I greet someone who is celebrating Eid al-Adha?

The common greeting during Eid al-Adha is “Eid Mubarak” (pronounced ‘Eed Mu-ba-rack’), which means “Blessed Eid” and is used to wish someone a joyous and happy Eid celebration.

May this Eid bring joy, unity, and renewed faith to all who celebrate!
