October 14, 2026

Mari Luz Canaquiri says, “Her river is the ‘ɨa’ – the center, life force and mother. Her river deep in Peru’s Amazon provides fish to eat, a transport route and a place to swim and relax. But it is also much more. Underneath the surface live the Karuara, which means ‘people of the river’ in her native tongue.” (Karuara website)

I am so honoured to shared that alongside the Arts and Science Program, LANMU is inviting you all for a special screening of Karuara: People of the River, an award-winning documentary, which follows Mari Luz Canaquiri and the Kukama women’s federation as they work to defend the Marañón River (Perú) and have it recognized as rights bearing entity.
