Join the Purolator Chair in Sustainable Logistics and Supply Chain Management at McMaster University for a two-day hackathon on October 15 to 16 focused on sustainable EV battery lifecycle management.
Working in interdisciplinary teams of three to five students, participants will develop data-driven models, analytical tools, and actionable business insights to help Purolator determine when EV batteries should be retired from active fleet service and whether their remaining capacity can be repurposed as stationary energy storage to support EV charging at terminals.
Solutions will use battery State of Health (SOH) and other relevant data to estimate remaining useful fleet life, predict end-of-life thresholds, assess second-life suitability, and quantify potential operational, financial, and sustainability benefits, including electricity cost savings.
Each team will be supported by a Purolator mentor and a McMaster Smart Freight Centre graduate student Group Manager.
Participants will compete for exciting awards and professional opportunities, including the Purolator Innovation Fellowship and internship opportunity, the chance for the winning team to present to Purolator management, and awards recognizing sustainability, practical impact, user-friendly solutions, and operational excellence.
The hackathon is open exclusively to current McMaster University undergraduate and graduate students. Students may register individually or as a team of 3–5. Individual applicants will be placed on interdisciplinary teams.
Registration does not guarantee selection. Applications will be reviewed based on collaboration, initiative, creativity, communication, motivation, adaptability, and the unique value applicants can bring to the program. Full attendance on both days is expected.
