I chose DeGroote because I knew the program would set me up for success in all my goals and provide the team oriented environment I was looking for. DeGroote allowed me to pivot from Mechanical Engineering to Business very easily by allowing me to apply my transferable skills and meet the amazing network of students and alumni. Being a former varsity athlete, I wanted a competitive, yet team oriented culture and DeGroote has that. It’s the perfect balance of academics, extra-curricular activities, case competitions, and networking!
I decided to pursue my MBA because I always valued relationships more than anything. While I appreciate the problem solving and analytical skills I exemplified as an engineer, I found the collaboration and strategy side was missing from my role. This program and my work terms have already given me multiple opportunities to challenge my decision making and interpersonal skills. It is teaching me how to be a great leader and mentor for when I become a manager.
DeGroote surprised me with the multitude of extra-curricular activities available to the students. I highly recommend stepping outside of your comfort zone and participating in anything you’re interested in. With no experience, I did two case competitions (outside of academically sanctioned ones) and they improved my presentation skills. MBA Games was the highlight of my first semester because you meet students from all years and build amazing relationships. DeGroote MBAs for Impact (DMI) is very dear to me because we give back to the community any way we can through fundraising activities and donations.
Do anything and everything you are interested in even if you are nervous, because it will pay off and definitely help you leverage yourself during the recruiting process.
MBA Games and Case Competitions have definitely been the highlights for me so far. I am highly competitive and I love a good challenge. But I also enjoy making new friends and winning as a team (we won MBA Games 2020!!).
I used to dance Hula professionally.
