Biography

Dr. Yufei Yuan is a professor of information systems in the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University, Canada. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Information Systems from the University of Michigan, U.S., and his B.S. in Mathematics from Fudan University, China. Dr. Yuan's research spans a broad range of topics, including artificial intelligence, big data analytics, information security, privacy and trust, mobile and social commerce, emergency response systems, web-based negotiation support systems, human-computer interaction, fuzzy logic and expert systems, matching problems, and healthcare information systems. With ongoing support from NSERC and SSHRC grants, Dr. Yuan has led numerous projects focused on developing web-based negotiation support systems, analyzing emergency response system requirements for large-scale disasters, and conducting risk analyses related to security breaches, identity theft, organized crime, and the spread of misinformation on social media platforms. Recently, his research has concentrated on exploring the impact of conversational agents on the job identity of front-line employees, as well as designing intelligent conversational agents to assist with home healthcare for older adults. Dr. Yuan is a distinguished researcher and educator in the field of Information Systems, with an impressive track record of publications in some of the most prestigious journals, including MIS Quarterly, Management Science, and Journal of Management Information Systems. His research work has been recognized and disseminated in high-quality outlets, such as the European Journal of Information Systems, Information & Management, and Communications of the ACM, among others. Moreover, Dr. Yuan's contributions have been showcased at leading conferences, including the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS), and the Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS). In addition to his research achievements, Dr. Yuan is passionate about education and mentoring. He fosters a learning environment that emphasizes exploration, innovation, and self-motivation among his students. He actively encourages them to identify significant research problems stemming from real-world challenges. Known for his supportive approach, Dr. Yuan builds respectful and collaborative relationships with his students, viewing them as friends and partners in research. His dedication to student development is evident in his successful supervision of 17 PhD students, 7 postdoctoral fellows, and 9 visiting PhD students. Dr. Yufei Yuan's noteworthy contributions and accomplishments in academia have earned him significant recognition throughout his career. He was appointed as the Wayne C. Fox Chair in Business Innovation, a prestigious position he held from September 2002 to June 2008, reflecting his expertise and influence in the field. His dedication to research was acknowledged with the Faculty Research Excellence Award from the DeGroote School of Business in 2009, highlighting his commitment to advancing knowledge and understanding in business innovation. In 2011, Dr. Yuan received the Professional Achievement Award from the Mandarin Profile Program, Fairchild Television in Toronto, showcasing his impact beyond the academic sphere and into the broader community. His recognition extends to being included in "Who’s Who in Canada" since 2004, a testament to his distinguished professional reputation and contributions over the years.
