On Tuesday, January 21, the DeGroote Pride Association (DPA) hosted our first-ever charity drag show, “Drag Hour,” at Bridges Café. This event was in support of Speqtrum, a youth-founded and youth-focused organization in support of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Drag Hour served as an opportunity for students to create memories, feel community here at McMaster and help raise money for Speqtrum.
The magic of drag: Why Drag Hour mattered
The DeGroote Pride Association hosted three extraordinary drag queens: Perditta Von Tease, TammyTHEBrown and McMaster’s own SirLadyNickx. These talented performers, all local to the greater Hamilton area, helped foster a strong sense of community through their performances.
Iconic queer songs united the audience, including “Your Makeup is Terrible” by Alaska T., performed by TammyTHEBrown, blending both humour and empowerment. SirLadyNickx performed songs by Chappell Roan, a vital voice in queer representation. Perditta Von Tease performed the beloved “Cell Block Tango” from Chicago, a staple in queer culture and for those who enjoy theatre. The setlist had something for everyone, and the audience certainly enjoyed the performances. Each act reflected the courage and creativity that define the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The audience’s engagement made it clear this event was about fostering joy, connection and empowerment, in addition to raising money for local queer youth.
Building community and creating change with Speqtrum
When selecting a charity to support, we looked at two primary factors: how local to Hamilton it is and that it focuses on supporting the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Speqtrum aims for people in Hamilton’s Two Spirit and LGBTQIA+ youth to form and maintain healthy, close relationships with their peers and community. This focus aligns perfectly with DPA’s vision to not only support 2SLGBTQIA+ students but to educate the broader DeGroote community to embrace inclusivity and diversity.
The support Speqtrum offers is important as it works with youth who are struggling and learning about different parts of their identity. It also provides them with a space to come together and work through it as a community. The event provided a safe and welcoming environment for attendees to enjoy the show. Speqtrum’s programming, including weekly check-ins and BIPOC events, fosters connection and belonging. Promoting this resource ensures McMaster students are aware of its impact in Hamilton. By supporting Speqtrum, we aimed to directly contribute to their impactful work through donations, while educating those who attended the event on how important these programs are.
More than a show
Drag Hour wasn’t just a show, it was a space for connection at McMaster University. My team and I wanted to hold this event at a very crucial time for students in the semester, just before midterm season begins. The event served as a fun de-stresser for students returning to campus life following the winter break. Overall, the event raised $227 for Speqtrum and was an incredible milestone for our first charity fundraiser. We’re excited to see it grow in the future.
