Biography

Dr. Mahmut Parlar is a Distinguished University Professor and Professor of Management Science at the DeGroote School of Business. He was the inaugural Distinguished Business Research Professor (and later, Business Research Chair) from 2014 to 2025. Dr. Parlar's research program focuses on stochastic modeling, dynamic optimization, and game theory applications in supply chain management. His work in these areas has been supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) research grants since 1981 and has resulted in nearly 130 refereed articles published in journals such as Operations Research, Management Science, Manufacturing and Service Operations Management, Journal of Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, Naval Research Logistics, IIE Transactions, Transportation Science, Applied Mathematical Finance, and others. Dr. Parlar is the author of a book entitled Interactive Operations Research with Maple, published in 2000 by Birkhäuser, Boston. He was awarded the inaugural DeGroote School of Business Faculty Research Excellence Award in March 2006. On September 6, 2013, Dr. Parlar received the President's Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision. He also won the Dr. S. J. Basu Teaching Award for exceptional teaching (1st Year MBA-level) at the DeGroote School of Business in November 2014. On June 5, 2018, Dr. Parlar received the CORS 2018 Award of Merit. He is listed in the "Stanford's Top 2% Scientists 2023" dataset, an emerging ranking that identifies scholars who are top-cited in their respective fields.
