Karun Tangri, president of the DeGroote Commerce Society, knows just how important it is to develop meaningful relationships that deepen students’ connections and expand their networks. He was one of many students who attended a recent DeGroote School of Business networking event to connect with alumni and business leaders.
“Seeing dozens of accomplished alumni giving back and sharing their experiences with a group of enthusiastic and passionate undergraduate students speaks to the culture of community and collaboration we have at DeGroote,” said Karun Tangri. “It is these values that are embedded in the core of the BCom experience and creates the incredible student leaders that define our business school.”
7th annual Commerce Student and Alumni Networking Reception
Undergrad students stepped outside the classroom on November 7 to attend the 7th annual Commerce Student and Alumni Networking Reception at The Walrus Pub and Beer Hall. Students had the opportunity to meet, network, and play ping pong with more than 80 alumni representing more than 50 employers including Amazon, Microsoft Canada, OMERS, and U-Pak Group of Companies. Speakers included alumna Taylor Boer (BCom ’15), who shared how she began her career in the world of consumer-packaged goods.
“My career journey started the day that I took my first class at DeGroote. As much as school is about what goes on inside the classroom, it is just as important to get involved outside of the classroom, because that is where you will differentiate yourself from your peers and also learn something that wouldn’t come from inside the classroom,” said Taylor Boer, “I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t take advantage of the opportunities that DeGroote offered me, both in school, and afterwards.”
MBA Mixer
The previous evening, DeGroote’s Career and Professional Development Team hosted the MBA Mixer at the Firkin on Harbour in Toronto. The event brought MBA students together with alumni to network and share their experiences. The School’s Career and Professional Development team encourages MBA alumni to remain actively engaged with the program, so that they can share their experience and skills, and provide advice to current MBA students. Alumni currently working at KPMG, Deloitte, Simplii, Pfizer, and Sick Kids were all in attendance.
