What is Diwali?

Diwali, also called Divali or Deepavali, is the Indian festival of lights, celebrated primarily by those who follow the Hindu, Sikh and Jain faiths. This holiday signifies the triumph of light over dark, and good over evil.

When is Diwali?

This year, Diwali takes place on Thursday, November 31, 2024. While it always occurs in the Fall, the exact date changes every year because it is celebrated on the new moon when the sky is darkest. Some parts of India celebrate for 5 days with the main celebration on the third day, while others only celebrate on the main day.

How is Diwali celebrated?

On the night of Diwali, loved ones gather to eat, pray, and “light up the dark night” by lighting candles, lanterns and diyas (clay lamps) inside their homes and outdoors. Fireworks are set off, which are believed to protect against evil spirits. Families also enjoy a feast of sweet and savoury treats, exchange gifts, and wear their best colourful, traditional, often new clothing.

How to greet someone who is celebrating Diwali

Diwali is a joyous holiday, so a common greeting is to wish someone a “Happy Diwali” (English), or “Shubh Diwali” (Hindi).
