We’re inviting all members of the McMaster community — faculty, staff, researchers and students — to take part in an upcoming in-person engagement session to help define what a Smart Campus could look like at McMaster.
These sessions will explore how smart campus systems could improve campus life. We’ll discuss how technology might be used to make McMaster more inclusive, sustainable, and efficient. If you have ideas or experiences related to these questions, we encourage you to attend and share your perspective.
What is a Smart Campus?
A Smart Campus uses digital technologies, data, and automation to create a more connected, efficient, and engaging university experience for students, faculty, researchers, and staff alike. Systems and spaces are integrated to improve learning, collaboration, and campus life. This means using technology not just for convenience, but to make the campus more sustainable, accessible, and responsive to community needs.
About the Initiative
This is a visioning exercise — an opportunity to imagine how digital innovation, sustainable practices and inclusive design could transform campus life. A Smart Campus might include intelligent building systems, real-time data tools and digital services that reduce barriers and improve how we learn, teach, live and work together. This initiative aligns with McMaster’s strategic priorities, including our carbon reduction goals.
What to Expect at the Session:
You’ll hear a brief overview of early work, including:
- A proof-of-concept smart campus project completed in 2021–2022
- Current thinking around smart integration in the McLean Centre for Collaborative Discovery
- Ideas for future possibilities
Participants will work in small groups to share ideas and complete a short questionnaire to help shape McMaster’s Smart Campus vision. Your input will help shape the direction we take.
