What you need to know!
Fellows will spend a full year abroad divided into three terms:
- The language learning term: where the fellow will take language courses, live with a host family, and volunteer at a local organization
- The academic term: where the fellow will take a full-time course load with a university abroad (studying at a McMaster partner institution or studying on a Letter of Permission at the institution of the fellow’s choice)
- The work term: where the fellow secures a full-time, paid placement or internship
This program recognizes the financial burden of moving to a different country, so the scope of financial support is broad and inclusive, including:
- Monthly living stipend of $1,500 during the language and academic terms
- Tuition costs through home university (if studying abroad through McMaster’s exchange program)
- Travel and establishment allowance of $3,000
- Language course allowance of up to $4,500
- International medical insurance of up to $1,500
ELIGIBILITY:
All applicants applying for the fellowship in 2024 (for departure in summer 2025) must meet the following criteria:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Be between 19 and 24
- Be enrolled at McMaster University
- Be enrolled full time in a first entry undergraduate program
- Have a minimum CGPA 8.0 at McMaster
- For degrees of 4 or more years: must have completed at least 3 years prior to departure
- For degrees of fewer than four years: must have completed at least 2 academic terms prior to departure
- Have not met the requirements to graduate prior to departure
- Have not left Canada to participate in a travel, work, study, or volunteer abroad experience independently for 8 or more months in the last 3 years
