Biography

Katya Malinova is an Associate Professor of Finance and the Mackenzie Investments Chair in Evidence-Based Investment Management at the DeGroote School of Business. Her research studies how the design of financial markets shapes trading costs, liquidity, competition, and access to market information. Her current work examines how market-data fees can entrench incumbent exchanges, why exchanges pay liquidity rebates, whether automated market makers from decentralized finance could improve equity trading, and how tokenized securities can be used for trading and capital raising. Her research has appeared in the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, Management Science, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of Financial Markets, and Research Policy, and is supported by SSHRC. Dr. Malinova works closely with Canadian securities regulators. She co-chairs the Canadian Securities Administrators' Retail Committee on access to real-time market data, and previously co-chaired the CSA's Data Fees Methodology Industry Committee. She serves on the Research Advisory Council of the Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE and is a Fellow of the Crypto and Blockchain Economics Research Forum. She is an Editor of the Journal of Financial Technology and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Financial Markets and Financial Management. She co-founded The Microstructure Exchange, an online research seminar. Before joining DeGroote in 2018, she was a tenured faculty member in the Department of Economics at the University of Toronto.
